Geres’ contribution in this project focuses on:
SWITCH and VETHIC
- raising awareness and demand for appropriate technologies and advisory services for sustainable energy solutions and practices.
- supporting capacity development among factories and dedicated training facilities about possible options and solutions
- linking with suppliers and service providers
- facilitating pilot implementation, monitoring and disseminating improvements
- rallying international brands sourcing garment from Cambodia to take coordinated action towards sustainable energy practices amongst garment supply chains, including the substitution of traceable wood or agro-residues for non-sustainable or illegal wood.
VETHIC
- Environmental performance, economic performance, environmental working conditions, risk prevention, health and vulnerability reduction are better perceived and taken into account in textile factories.
The Technical Engineer will ensure the technical coordination of field project activities. S/he is expected to provide strong technical guidance on those activities in the field of energy efficiency solutions and practices relating to electrical/thermal processes and utilities in garment manufacturing factories, especially SMEs.
S/he will also contribute to oversee the overall project implementation by Geres consultants and consortium partners under the supervision of the Energy Efficiency Program Officer.
Conditions
Throughout the implementation of the project, the project team will be based in Geres’ office in Phnom Penh, carry out frequent field work in different garment factories in the country as well as GMAC’s training center. The project team will also occasionally travel abroad to assess, document and introduce solutions that may not yet be available in Cambodia or learn from other initiatives.
The project team will closely collaborate with Geres’ local HR and Finance manager and officer as well as the local logistics officer assisting the project team in day-to-day activities.
- Technical responsibilities (with focus on both electrical/thermal processes and utilities):
- Support the team to answer technical questions on energy efficiency in equipment’s
- Gather, analyze data and lessons learned from energy audits completed under Switch Garment Project; document a range of possible key technical, organizational and financial solutions.
- Together with Geres team, help advise factories on developing industrial energy efficiency action plans and mentor interested individual factories to facilitate implementation of key measures.
- Join meetings, trainings and energy assessments with garment factories; analyze audit results and findings; conduct international benchmarking of energy-efficient and renewable energy solutions for the industry; derive general sector-relevant acknowledgements and recommendations;
- Participate in the writing of appropriate technical briefs and tutorials about sustainable energy solutions for garment factories, on topics that may range from general management to specific technical improvements.
- Participate in the review of technical documentation and the trainings about Energy Efficiency
- With the support of external consultants, support the selection and implementation of energy-efficient investments and improvements of energy practices in pilot factory premises and coordinate monitoring campaigns to provide detailed information about the evolution in the energy profile of the factory and related energy, cost and CO2 savings.
- Contribute actively to the organization of monitoring campaigns in the pilot factories
- Support Geres team in the elaboration of an online energy self assessment and improvement tool to be used by the factories.
- Contributions to Project Coordination:
- Under the supervision of the Energy Efficiency Program Officer, coordinate the implementation of Geres’ project activities in his/her technical area of expertise with internal and external contributors, consultants and key partners,
- Support the team in the sound management and implementation of other project activities such as:
- work planning and quality, timely delivery of project outputs; monitoring achievements, analyzing deviations and taking corrective actions when needed
- contributes to the formulation of relevant Terms of Reference and recruiting external experts or project staff;
- contributes to Collection of information from the team, beneficiaries and possibly partners, drafting internal and external reporting documents and ensuring timely reporting to the EU via GGGI and to other donors;
- Supporting and facilitating the integration of project achievements, procedures and lessons learned in other GERES’ projects and, when relevant, into partner’s activities, national policies and strategies.
- Contribute to the organization of trainings, meetings, and workshops gathering garment suppliers, international buyers, government representatives and other stakeholders to share results, promote promising options, present supporting tools, through mobilizing the participants, budgeting and coordinating the events.
- Contribution to the development of GERES activities in his/her field of intervention
- Provide technical inputs and insights for the design of new projects, activities or innovations;
- Upon request from the International team leader, the Country Representative or the Regional Director, represent the project towards implementation or institutional partners and donors.
- Experience
- Minimum 3 years of experience in positions related to energy efficiency in the manufacturing sector, preferably in the industry;
- Minimum 2 years of Experience with either boilers, steam systems, garment manufacturing facilities, lighting, ventilation and HVAC Systems, energy consumption monitoring;
- Experience in managing projects, teams, budgets, plans, relationships with partners and customers/ donors, preferably related to industry, energy supply or energy efficiency is a strong asset;
- Familiarity with the garment manufacturing sector is an asset;Experience in renewable biomass energy consumption is a strong asset.
- Education & Training
- Needed : Master Engineering degree (or a Bachelor Engineering degree with strong experience) in energy engineering, electrical or thermal engineering, steam management, or any relevant field ;
- Degree in either business management, energy, forestry, climate and environment or management of natural resources an asset.
- Skills
- 1. Fluency and excellent communication skills in Khmer and English - 2. Knowledge of a Chinese language is an asset.
