In 2014, Smiling Gecko Cambodia (SGC) was officially registered as a local NGO in Cambodia. SGC is legally independent of Smiling Gecko Switzerland. Following its mission of “Cambodians helping Cambodians” the organization, focuses on fighting the causes of poverty and helping people to help themselves. To this end, SGC launched a project on a previously acquired site to the North of Phnom Penh whose objective is to provide several thousand Cambodians with future job training and a regular income in the sectors of education, agriculture, tourism, industry, and trade.

Position Summary

REPORT TO : GONG Manager

FUNCTION : Sound Engineering, Events & Production

ROLE OVERIVEW

The Sound Engineer will manage the audio setup, operation, and sound quality for live music events, concerts, and public performances. You will be responsible for ensuring crystal-clear sound, minimal feedback, and a professional audio experience for both performers and audiences.

Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Set up and operate sound equipment for live music shows, concerts, and events
  • Mix live audio during performances using analog or digital consoles
  • Work closely with artists, stage managers, and production staff to meet sound requirements
  • Perform sound checks with performers and adjust EQ, gain structure, monitor mixes, and levels
  • Troubleshoot technical issues in real time with minimal disruption
  • Set up and manage microphones, monitors, DI boxes, in-ear systems, and PA systems
  • Maintain and protect audio gear and cables; assist in teardown and load-out
  • Ensure compliance with venue sound limits and local noise regulations
  • Coordinate with lighting and stage crews to ensure seamless production
  • Support multi-stage or multi-artist setups when needed
  • Be required to remain at THE GONG or the designated event venue until the event is fully completed, unless otherwise approved by the Music Director / General Manager (GM).
  • Maintain punctuality and reliable attendance, arriving on time for work, rehearsals, recordings, events, and other assigned activities.
  • Follow and respect all THE GONG rules, policies, procedures, and instructions from the Music Director / GM and management.
  • Demonstrate flexibility and willingness to adjust to changing schedules, operational needs, events, and assignments when required.
  • Maintain a cooperative, professional, and team-oriented attitude, working closely with the Music Director, GM, and other team members.
  • Proactively provide suggestions and practical solutions that can help improve workflow, efficiency, teamwork, and the smooth operation of THE GONG
  • Support other operational tasks when required to ensure the smooth and efficient running of activities, events, recordings, and programs.

Expected Profile of Candidates
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree
Skills & Knowledge:
General & Technical Skills
  • Proven experience in live sound engineering (minimum [2-5] years preferred)
  • Deep understanding of live sound systems, including FOH (Front of House) and monitor mixes
  • Proficiency with digital and analog mixing consoles (e.g., Behringer X32, Midas, Yamaha, Avid, etc.)
  • Strong grasp of gain staging, EQ, compression, effects, and routing
  • Formal training in audio engineering or related field (degree or certification)
  • Experience working in multiple venue types (clubs, outdoor stages, festivals)
  • Knowledge of RF systems, wireless coordination, and in-ear monitoring
  • Familiarity with backline equipment and stage plots
  • Driver’s license and reliable transportation (especially for freelance roles)
Soft Skills
  • Ability to work under pressure in fast-paced environments
  • Excellent troubleshooting and communication skills
  • Physically fit and able to lift heavy equipment when needed
  • Flexible schedule, including availability for evenings, weekends, and travel
