Reporting to the Third Secretary (Political/Development), the Senior Research Officer (Political and Economic) will perform a critical role in providing advice and research to the Ambassador and Embassy Political Section on Cambodian domestic political, foreign policy and economic issues, and on issues relevant to the Australia-Cambodian bilateral relationship. The position also develops and maintains relationships with a range of Cambodian government and non-government entities, supports Embassy staff in engaging with Cambodian counterparts, and actively contributes to shaping the Embassy’s political engagement in Cambodia.
This position is available immediately, and after an initial three-month probationary period, the successful candidate may be offered a 24-month contract, with the possibility of renewal and ultimately permanent employment.
The successful candidate will have a good general understanding of Cambodian political, foreign policy and economic issues, including relevant work experience. This is an “all-rounder” position with scope for candidates to learn and improve on the job. Sound judgement and a high level of motivation, initiative and self-management, with the ability to make recommendations and propose new ideas and willingness to undertake new or unfamiliar tasks, are key. The candidate should have strong interpersonal, networking and relationship-building skills, and the ability to work under pressure and deadline, manage competing priorities and work both individually and part of a team. Strong written and oral communication skills and the ability to provide quick, high-quality translation and interpretation between English and Khmer are essential.
A competitive salary package is offered, including participation in a performance management and bonus scheme. The basic monthly salary range for the position is USD1,997 to USD2,403.
