The Senior Pediatric Nurse is responsible for providing safe, compassionate and competent pediatric nursing care while overseeing the daily nursing operations of True Care Wellness Clinic. The role is hands-on and involves working closely with the treating pediatrician, conducting triage and patient monitoring, assisting with consultations and procedures, performing pediatric venepuncture and blood collection, carrying out POCT investigations, dispensing medications and educating parents. The Senior Nurse also leads, supervises and trains three junior nurses, ensuring competency, adherence to clinical protocols, infection prevention, patient safety and accurate documentation. In addition, the role includes managing inpatient room readiness, clinical supplies, medications and reagents, supporting emergency preparedness, coordinating with cleaners and other clinic staff, identifying operational issues and ensuring smooth clinic and inpatient services. The ideal candidate should be a registered nurse with strong pediatric experience, excellent pediatric venepuncture skills, good communication abilities, leadership capability, and the ability to communicate in both Khmer and English.
Job Purpose
- The Senior Pediatric Nurse is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day nursing operations of the pediatric clinic and providing safe, competent and child-friendly nursing care to all patients.
- The Senior Pediatric Nurse will work closely with the in-house pediatrician and will take a leadership role over the three junior nurses. The position requires a nurse who is highly confident in pediatric nursing, particularly venepuncture and blood collection in children, and who is capable of training, supervising and developing junior nurses to achieve the clinic’s required standards.
- The Senior Nurse is expected to be actively involved in daily clinical work rather than functioning solely in a supervisory capacity.
- Pediatric Patient Care
- Provide safe, compassionate and professional nursing care to pediatric patients.
- Assess patients and obtain relevant nursing information before medical consultation.
- Perform and document triage vital signs including temperature, heart rate, respiratory rate, oxygen saturation, blood pressure where clinically indicated, weight and other relevant measurements.
- Assist the pediatrician during patient assessment, procedures and treatment.
- Prepare patients for investigations and procedures.
- Monitor patients throughout their stay in the clinic.
- Monitor patients requiring observation or inpatient care and regularly assess vital signs and clinical condition.
- Recognise deterioration or inadequate clinical improvement and promptly inform the treating doctor.
- Escalate significant clinical concerns to the pediatrician without delay.
- Ensure appropriate follow-up and continuity of nursing care.
- Pediatric Venepuncture & Blood Collection
- This is a key responsibility of the position.
- Be highly competent and confident in venepuncture and blood collection in infants, children and difficult-to-access pediatric patients.
- Select appropriate collection tubes and equipment.
- Perform correct patient identification and specimen labelling.
- Obtain blood samples safely while minimising distress to the child.
- Manage difficult blood draws and know when to seek assistance or escalate.
- Perform capillary blood sampling where appropriate.
- Ensure proper handling, storage and transfer of specimens.
- Maintain infection prevention and control standards during blood collection.
- Train and supervise junior nurses in safe pediatric blood-taking techniques.
- Act as the primary nurse responsible for pediatric blood collection within the clinic.
- Point-of-Care Testing & Investigations
- Perform simple blood investigations using the clinic’s POCT machines.
- Perform appropriate diagnostic tests using available test kits.
- Ensure correct specimen collection, preparation and processing.
- Follow manufacturer instructions and clinic protocols for POCT equipment.
- Recognise abnormal or unexpected results and promptly inform the treating doctor.
- Ensure results are accurately recorded in the patient medical record.
- Maintain quality control and cleanliness of testing equipment.
- Monitor availability and expiry dates of reagents, cartridges and test kits.
- Train junior nurses in correct use of POCT machines and test kits.
- Medication Dispensing & Patient Education
- Dispense pediatric medications accurately according to the treating doctor’s prescription.
- Check medication, dose, route, frequency and duration before dispensing.
- Ensure the correct medication is given to the correct patient.
- Explain medication name and purpose, dose, frequency, duration, method of administration, relevant precautions, storage requirements and relevant side effects or warning signs.
- Provide additional explanation to parents/caregivers when clarification is required.
- Identify and clarify any unclear or potentially inappropriate prescription with the treating doctor before dispensing.
- Supervise junior nurses in safe and accurate medication dispensing.
- Working With the Pediatrician
- Work closely with the in-house pediatrician throughout the working day.
- Prepare patients and equipment required for consultations and procedures.
- Carry out nursing tasks and procedures instructed by the treating doctor.
- Communicate patient updates, investigation results and changes in clinical condition promptly.
- Inform the doctor when a patient is not improving as expected.
- Escalate concerns regarding deterioration, abnormal vital signs or abnormal investigation results.
- Act as the communication link between the doctor and nursing/reception team where required.
- Provide Khmer-English translation support to the treating doctor when required, particularly during patient assessment, treatment explanation and communication with parents.
- Ensure instructions given by the doctor are understood and appropriately carried out by the nursing team.
- Leadership & Supervision of Junior Nurses
- The Senior Pediatric Nurse will be the nursing team leader and will take direct responsibility for the performance and development of the three junior nurses.
- Allocate daily nursing duties among junior nurses.
- Supervise the nursing team during clinic operations.
- Ensure junior nurses complete assigned responsibilities correctly and on time.
- Observe junior nurses’ clinical practice and provide immediate correction where required.
- Identify gaps in nursing competency and provide targeted training.
- Conduct regular practical teaching and skills training.
- Train junior nurses in pediatric venepuncture, blood collection, vital signs, triage, medication dispensing, patient preparation, POCT testing, test kit usage, specimen collection, infection control, patient monitoring, documentation and basic pediatric nursing procedures.
- Gradually assess and develop junior nurses towards independent practice.
- Ensure junior nurses do not perform procedures beyond their demonstrated competency.
- Maintain a high standard of professionalism, teamwork and patient safety.
- Report significant staff performance or competency issues to the Clinic Manager.
- Training Expectations
- The Senior Nurse should establish a structured competency-based training approach for junior nurses: Demonstration → Supervised Practice → Competency Assessment → Independent Practice → Ongoing Monitoring.
- Clinic Nursing Operations
- Ensure nursing areas are prepared before clinic opening.
- Ensure essential clinical equipment is available and functional.
- Ensure emergency equipment and essential supplies are ready for use.
- Coordinate patient flow with reception and the treating doctor.
- Ensure consultation rooms are appropriately prepared.
- Ensure clinical procedures are performed according to clinic protocols.
- Maintain cleanliness and infection prevention standards within nursing areas.
- Ensure proper documentation of nursing activities.
- Identify operational problems and take appropriate action.
- Be proactive in solving problems rather than simply reporting problems to management.
- Inform the Clinic Manager of significant operational, staffing, safety or clinical issues.
- Inpatient Care & Room Readiness
- Inpatient Room Preparation
- Ensure the inpatient room is clean, organised and adequately prepared before patient admission.
- Prepare and check bathing towels, hand towels, bed linen and blankets.
- Ensure drinking water, cups, plates, bowls and cutlery are available.
- Prepare basic patient hygiene items and other essential patient comfort items required by the clinic.
- Ensure all required clinical and patient-care supplies are available before the patient enters the room.
- Check that the room, bed and surrounding area are safe and suitable for pediatric patients.
- -Coordinate with reception or other clinic staff when additional amenities are required.
- Anticipate patient needs and ensure appropriate supplies are prepared rather than waiting for the parent to request them.
- Ensure the room remains adequately stocked throughout the patient’s stay.
- Inpatient Room During Patient Stay
- Regularly check the patient’s room and ensure it remains clean, safe and adequately supplied.
- Ensure parents/caregivers are provided with necessary basic amenities.
- Replace used towels, linen, drinking water and other supplies when required.
- Coordinate with the clinic cleaner when cleaning or additional housekeeping support is required.
- Ensure clinical waste and other waste are appropriately managed.
- Monitor the overall comfort and safety of the pediatric patient and accompanying parent/caregiver.
- Inpatient Room After Discharge
- Confirm that the patient has fully vacated the room and that all belongings have been collected.
- Remove or arrange removal of used towels, linen, disposable items and other patient-specific materials.
- Check the room for remaining medications, medical supplies or patient belongings.
- Engage and coordinate with the clinic cleaner to thoroughly clean and tidy the inpatient room after every patient discharge.
- Ensure the bed is cleaned and remade with fresh linen.
- Ensure used towels and other reusable items are sent for appropriate cleaning/laundry.
- Ensure drinking water, cups, cutlery and other amenities are replenished.
- Check that the room is properly organised and ready for the next patient.
- Report damaged equipment, missing items or maintenance issues to the Clinic Manager. Clinical leadership is vital every day.
