Use Your Research Superpowers to Change the World
Let's be honest: most research jobs don't let you tackle malaria prevention one month, sustainable agriculture the next, and climate adaptation strategies the month after that. But that's exactly what we do at 17 Triggers.
We're a human-centered design studio on a mission to solve some of Southeast Asia's most pressing behavioral challenges. We work with everyone from the World Bank to local NGOs, from government ministries to grassroots organizations. And we need a Senior Design Researcher and Strategist who's equal parts curious anthropologist, strategic thinker, and creative problem-solver to help us take our work to the next level.
What You'll Actually Do
This isn't a desk job. (Well, sometimes it is. But mostly it's not.)
One week you might be conducting in-depth interviews with farmers in Battambang about their rice cultivation practices, the next you're facilitating a co-creation workshop with healthcare workers in Phnom Penh. Then you're synthesizing everything into strategic insights that shape a national behavior change campaign.
What It's Really Like to Work Here
We're not going to pretend we're changing the world single-handedly or that every day is perfect. Development work is complex, stakeholders can be challenging, and field research in Southeast Asia means dealing with heat, long drives, and mosquitoes.
But here's what we can promise: You'll work with a team that cares deeply about doing good work and doing it right. We're collaborative, not hierarchical. We value evidence over ego. We believe the best insights come from listening to communities, not imposing solutions. And we try not to take ourselves too seriously along the way.
We're also a small team, which means your voice matters and your work has a direct impact on our direction. If you've been feeling stuck in a larger organization where your research disappears into a void, this might be the change you need.
- More specifically, you'll:
- Lead human-centered design research projects from start to finish—from crafting research questions to presenting strategic recommendations
- Get out in the field regularly, using ethnographic methods to understand how people really live, work, and make decisions
- Apply behavioral science frameworks to identify what's actually blocking behavior change (spoiler: it's rarely what clients initially think)
- Facilitate ideation and co-creation sessions that bring together diverse stakeholders to develop innovative solutions
- Manage relationships with clients ranging from UN agencies to local community organizations
- Mentor junior researchers and contribute to building our team's research capabilities
- Help shape 17 Triggers' strategic direction as we grow our impact across the region
- Competitive compensation: We pay well for the Cambodia market and recognize international experience appropriately
- Meaningful work: Your research directly influences programs reaching thousands (sometimes millions) of people
- Diverse portfolio: You'll work across a variety of sectors so you'll never be bored
- Great team: Work with talented creatives and strategists who genuinely like each other
- Flexibility: Hybrid work model with flexibility around remote work when project needs allow
- Comprehensive benefits: Health insurance, generous leave, and regular team activities
- Creative environment: We value your ideas, encourage experimentation, and actually want to hear what you think
- You can translate complex research findings into clear, actionable insights that non-researchers can actually use
- You're comfortable managing projects, timelines, and budgets while keeping quality high
- You're fluent in English (Khmer proficiency would be a significant plus)
- Formal HCD training from IDEO, Stanford d.school, or similar programs, this is a big asset for us
- Experience working in Southeast Asia, especially Cambodia
- A portfolio showcasing social impact projects where you can walk us through your research process and outcomes
- Sector expertise in health, climate change, agriculture, renewable energy, or financial inclusion
- Experience working with major development partners like World Bank, USAID, FCDO, or Asian Development Bank
- Knowledge of behavioral science frameworks beyond basic theory—you've actually applied COM-B, Behavior Change Wheel, nudge theory, or similar approaches in real projects
- You're genuinely curious about people: why they do what they do, what motivates them, what gets in their way
- You thrive in ambiguous situations and can navigate stakeholder dynamics with diplomacy and skill
- You're excited to work in Cambodia, whether you're already here or ready to relocate
