Research Officer
We are seeking a qualified candidate to fill the new position of Research Officer (RO) is responsible for supporting all aspects of research assignments, including quantitative and qualitative research studies as well as formative, pre-testing and evaluative research. Working closely with the Senior Research Officer, the postholder supports the design of research methods and instruments, coordinates research freelancers, takes part in the analysis of qualitative and quantitative data, and writes research reports. RO works in collaboration with research team members and with colleagues in our projects, outreach and production teams as well as HQ in London.
Location base: Phnom Penh and will involve regular travel within Cambodia.

Type of contract: Undetermined duration contract
- Support/take part in all aspects of research – methodological design, fieldwork management, data analysis, and report writing.
- Plan and undertake qualitative and quantitative research with the Research and Learning team.
- Lead fieldwork/data collection and research freelancers and assure the quality of data collected.
- Ensure adherence to prescribed ethical rules and safeguarding protocols in order to protect the dignity, rights and welfare of research participants.
- Responsible for data recording, management, a cleaning.
- Support quantitative and qualitative data analysis and interpretation.
- Take part in writing research reports, presentations, and other dissemination products.
- Understand the needs of the organisation to ensure that all research is tailored and relevant, to deliver simple and valuable insight.
- Engage proactively and collaboratively with non-research staff in Cambodia to support the development and use of research in the production of BBC Media Action’s creative outputs.
- Communicate with all the teams across the organisation—work closely with research team members and with other colleagues in projects, outreach, and production teams as well as Research and Learning team in London.
- Support and mentor research assistants/interns (when the team members are recruited or assigned by the line manager) to develop their research skills.

- Essential Knowledge, Skills and Experience
- Good qualitative and/or quantitative research skills and experience, including method and instrument design, as well as data management and analysis.
- Have numeracy skills, including knowledge and skills of Microsoft Excel and other statistical software packages such as SPSS or similar.
- Good research report writing and presentation skills, communicating in non-technical language to a range of audiences.
- Experience of undertaking or managing fieldwork and adapting research methods to challenging and resource-constrained conditions.
- Experience of using digital research tools and applications, survey design software, online surveys, and social media analytics is a plus.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to engage appropriately with audiences, freelancers, local authorities, partners, and other stakeholders.
- Track record of delivering research findings on time and to a high standard.
- Ability to plan and conduct work with minimal supervision.
- Fluent in written and spoken English and Khmer.
- Ability to travel and work outside of Phnom Penh, with potential overnight stays.
- Right to live and work in Cambodia.
- Desirable Knowledge, Skills and Experience
- Prior research experience in the quantitative and/or qualitative role.
- Experience working with development organisations to apply research findings to develop health, governance, humanitarian response or resilience interventions.
- Ability to manage and prioritise multiple threads of work.
- Experience working with media organisations to apply research findings to production of media outputs and broadcast strategy.
