The Cambodian Center for Independent Media (CCIM) works to promote independent media, press freedom, freedom of expression, access to information and internet freedom. CCIM focuses on promoting and defending media freedom, freedom of expression, and access to information. CCIM is known for its efforts to support independent journalism and advocate for a vibrant media environment in Cambodia. Currently, CCIM focuses on 1) Citizen Journalists Network 2) Media Training 3) Media and Information Literacy Training 4) Advocacy Efforts.

Position Summary

Report to : Citizen Journalist Program Project Coordinator

The Project Officer and Editor for Citizen Journalist Program is primarily responsible for implementing the citizen journalist network program and activities to reach target output and expected outcomes with guidance and support from program coordinator In addition to project management, the project officer will be delivering journalism training to the CJs, conduct mentoring and coaching to the CJs in story production and community media initiatives, provide editorial guidance and support including shaping stories idea and edit text and video stories produced by the CJs. The project officer will also contribute to monitoring and tracking media data & CJ database and reporting upon completion of the training activities of the project.

Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Plan and implement the project activities:
  • Lead planning and delivering the capacity building program under CJN unit, and provide recommendation to strengthen the program quality and impact;
  • Conduct field mentoring and coaching support activities for citizen journalists in journalism and story productions;
  • Help identify risks and changes faced by CJs and make reports to upper level to take appropriate and effective measures.
  • Delivery of media and journalism training courses and workshops
  • Lead and contribute to development of the training manual, training curriculum, slide presentations and agenda of the training;
  • Be a trainer in or co-trainer in for the CJs on basic journalism, digital or physical security skills, community media, podcast and mobile production, and other training topics with guidance and assistance; .
  • Provide logistic and administrative support in the preparation of the training sessions such as preparing request budget, finding quotations, booking venues, purchasing training materials, attendance list, printing certificates and copying the documents for the training/workshop;
  • Provide editorial support to the CJs 
  • Provide editorial guidance to CJs in their reporting and story productions including finding story angles, interview techniques, finding sources, writing and video skills;
  • Support CJs in applying safety reporting protocols and address safety concerns during community reporting work;
  • Review and edit CJs reports to ensure balance and accuracy of the stories for publication;
  • Build a sustaining engagement with relevant stakeholders to ensure project success including engagement with the CJs, local authorities and community members;
  • Track and maintain records of stories and reports produced by CJs, including monitoring online engagement and performance across social media platforms.
  • Other duties as required
  • Perform other activities as may be assigned by the direct supervisor or Management Committee in relation to his/her tasks and duties. 
Expected Profile of Candidates
Languages:
  • Khmer - Fluent
  • English - Good
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree in media, journalism, social Sciences, or Project Management or any other related field.
Work History:
  • At least of experience in journalism, news reporting, video editing or non-government organizations and other civil society groups for 2 years
Skills & Knowledge:
General & Technical Skills
  • Have prior experiences in project management including designing, planning, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation and community field work is a preferred;
  • Ability to communicate effectively with various types of personalities
  • Proficient in written Khmer;
  • Ability to communicate and write in English
  • Sound understanding of Cambodian context in terms of human rights, journalism, freedom of expression, access to information, and media landscape
Soft Skills
  • A passionate and energetic team member with a genuine interest in working to develop independent and professional media, promote human rights and democratic governance.
  • Demonstrate flexible approach and ability to work under pressure and to organize and manage workload to meet deadlines
