Announcement Description

Mangrove forests are vital coastal ecosystems, providing critical ecological services such as shoreline protection, biodiversity habitat, carbon sequestration, and livelihood support for local communities. Globally, and particularly in Southeast Asia, mangroves face significant threats from anthropogenic pressures and climate change impacts, leading to widespread degradation and loss. Cambodia, with its extensive coastline, is not immune to these challenges.

The Prek Kampong Smach Marine Fisheries Management Area (MFMA) in Preah Sihanouk Province is a critical mangrove ecosystem in Cambodia. Recent observations and anecdotal evidence suggest an alarming trend of mangrove dieback and destruction within this MFMA, impacting its ecological integrity and the socio-economic well-being of surrounding communities. While the precise extent and underlying causes of this degradation are not fully understood, potential drivers include unsustainable resource extraction, land-use conversion (e.g., aquaculture expansion, coastal development), pollution, and hydrological alterations, potentially exacerbated by climate change effects such as sea-level rise and extreme weather events.

This rapid assessment research aims to provide a focused and timely investigation into the spatial and temporal changes in mangrove forest cover within the Prek Kampong Smach MFMA, identify key impact factors, and ascertain the primary drivers contributing to mangrove dieback and destruction. Given the tight timeframe, the study will leverage remote sensing techniques complemented by targeted field validation and stakeholder consultations to achieve its objectives efficiently.

Local Consultant to Support a Study on Mangrove Destruction

Position Summary

RESEARCH OBJECTIVES:

The overall objective of this research is to rapidly assess the extent of mangrove forest cover change and identify the key impact factors and drivers contributing to mangrove dieback and destruction within the Prek Kampong Smach MFMA.

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES:

  1. To map and quantify mangrove forest cover change within the Prek Kampong Smach MFMA from 2015 to 2025 using multi-temporal satellite imagery, highlighting areas of significant loss and dieback.
  2. To identify and characterize the biophysical impact factors associated with observed mangrove dieback and destruction hotspots through targeted field validation.
  3. To ascertain the primary socio-economic and anthropogenic drivers of mangrove degradation through stakeholder consultations.
  4. To conduct a rapid preliminary assessment and mapping of areas vulnerable to mangrove dieback and destruction, and identify communities at highest risk due to their dependence on these ecosystems.
  5. To provide rapid, evidence-based insights and preliminary recommendations for immediate management interventions and future research directions for the Prek Kampong Smach MFMA.

METHODOLOGY:

The mixed-methods approach will be employed, emphasizing remote sensing and rapid assessment techniques.

  • Phase 1: Remote Sensing and GIS Analysis
  • Phase 2: Targeted Field Validation and Rapid Biophysical Assessment
  • Phase 3: Stakeholder Consultations
  • Phase 4: Data Analysis, Synthesis, and Reporting
  • Phase 5: Validation Workshop
