Literacy Facilitator (2 Positions)
Position Overview
The Literacy Facilitator (LF) is responsible for supporting and coaching teachers, librarians, and principals to adopt new ways of working with children to increase their literacy skills and habit of reading. The LF will also be responsible for setting up and ensuring a highly functioning library and supporting Grade 1 and 2 teachers in implementing the literacy instruction program in their classrooms. The LF has no direct reports and will directly report to Literacy Program Officer
- General
- Support the literacy program intervention across assigned project schools, ensure adherence to the program design, and demonstrate solution-oriented approach to challenges encountered in schools
- Serve as the technical resource in assigned schools on applying literacy skills and the habit of reading techniques in the classroom and library
- Program Implementation and School Support Visits
- Undertake school visits every day, except for days when on official travel, attending Room to read meetings and trainings, or on leave
- Support teacher librarian(s) in the initial set up of the library
- Collaborate with school to support minor improvements to the library space (i.e. painting)
- Support logistics of annual delivery of library books, instruction materials and other program materials to schools Trainings, Workshops and Meetings
- Participate in required trainings and professional development opportunities to understand the Literacy program and how to provide effective coaching support
- Conduct and/or participate in Room to Read teacher and librarian trainings related to the Literacy program
- Regularly consult with Literacy Program Officer (LPO) to provide feedback on program design and for support in addressing technical challenges
- Planning, Reporting and Monitoring
- Conduct ongoing planning, documentation, and reporting of school visits and observations as required by Room to Read
- Regularly collect school-level data, program implementation monitoring data, library systems data and other required key program indicators
- Required:
- Bachelor Degree in education / social sciences or equivalent
- Minimum 3 years of relevant experience in development projects, preferably in education
- Strong written and oral communication skills
- Good interpersonal skills and a team player
- Ability to travel daily to target schools in agreed district
- Preferred:
- Teaching experience strongly preferred
- Prior experience working with schools, teachers, administrators and government officials, particularly at the primary school level
- Local candidates based in the target regions are strongly encouraged to apply
- Strong knowledge of approaches to language and reading education
- Loves to read
- Good computer use of Microsoft Office (Outlook, Work, Excel), internet and email
- Prior experience in a fast-paced, growth-oriented global or regional organization
- Effectiveness in working or volunteering in a non-profit organization that is focused on maintaining high quality work and low overhead
