English Teacher

Position Summary

Reports to

  • Direct line report to Centre Manager and Bambou Coordinator for overall operational matters.
  • Functional report to Head of Education Department, and PP Social Team Manager, for technical support & specific social matters.

Responsible for Teaching extra-classes to children and students, focusing on:

  • English language.
  • Respect and politeness values.
  • Developing an active learning methodology.
  • Proper assessment of children levels to adapt needed support

Working hours

Part-time (10 hours to 24 hours / week) – Monday to Friday + rarely during weekends for events. 2 options:

  • 10 to 14 hours / week split within 2 days, between 8.30am and 6pm.
  • Option 1) + 10 hours / week spilt within 4 days per week 6pm to 8pm

Location

Referring to above options:

  1. 1 location: CDCM, Toul Kork, Phnom-Penh.
  2. 2 locations: CDCM, Toul Kork + Russey Keo, Phnom Penh (4km from CDCM).

PURPOSE

EDM’s mission is to support the most vulnerable families, with a strong focus on education. The children we support today will help their country tomorrow.

Children supported by EDM are going to public school. EDM deploys in its center some extra-classes to provide additional support to the children, on academical as well as other matters, to strengthen their fundamentals knowledge and to develop their personality.

The English teacher plays a crucial role in children and students’ development.

Expectations - Duties, Responsibilities
  • Teaching English
  • Teach English Language to different levels (children, students and potentially staff), mainly to grade 1 to grade 9 children.
  • Prepare courses and exercises aligned with children’s levels and needs.
  • Courses will be based on a manual/methodology approved by the Center Manager, and address listening, speaking, reading and writing skills.
  • Ease children’s learning by using modern teaching techniques (multi-modal learning).
  • Implement active learning through lessons, activities, and effective teaching materials, to enable children to take maximum responsibility for their own learning and achievement.
  • Get out of traditional teaching methodology (based on repetition and learning by heart), to develop children’s ability to generate stories, explain their understanding, and express themselves.
  • Extra-curriculum activities
  • Give children a civic education, teaching respect and politeness values, as well as hygiene and clean environment.
  • Foster a learning environment that encourages curiosity, participation, and confidence.
  • Introduce to English culture and social behavior.
  • Organize regular activities outside the classroom (museum, exhibition, movies, …). Activities will be academic and non-academic.
  • Involve foreign volunteers from the organization in some initiatives.
  • Encourage positive behavior and discipline through non-violence methods.
  • Children Progress Assessment, Reporting, and Support
  • Prepare and correct regular tests and semester exams.
  • Monitor children’s results, analyze them and identify children needs.
  • Share feedback and collaborate with the social worker in charge of the children in need, including those requiring support with learning, behavioral issues, health, emotional well-being, etc.
  • Attend appointments with children’s parents or guardians, or other events arranged by EDM.
  • Children Behavior & Attendance Follow-up
  • Monitor children attendance every day.
  • Report any repetitive absence and share feedback regarding their behavior to the social worker in charge of the children.
  • Ensure monthly reporting of the above activities to the Centre Manager and Bambou Coordinator.
  • Support other activities as requested by the Centre Manager and Bambou Coordinator.
Requirements - Skills, Qualifications, Experience
  • Knowledge, skills and experience
  • At least 2-years of experience in teaching English to children.
  • Ability to develop curriculum and structured courses. Ability to work with autonomy.
  • Good knowledge of MS Word, Excel, SharePoint, use of audio & videos. Experience in on-line learning is a plus.
  • Fluent (speaking-reading-writing) in English, native English speaker preferred.
  • Intermediate speaking level in Khmer.
  • Soft skills
  • Kind-hearted with strong willingness to support the most vulnerable families, and passionate about promoting access to education for underprivileged children.
  • Minded toward explanation rather than instruction by command.

Primary Teacher

Position Summary

Khmer & Mathematics Teacher Grade 1 to 6

Reports to

  • Direct line report to Centre Manager and Bambou Coordinator for overall operational matters.
  • Functional report to Head of Education Department, and PP Social Team Manager, for technical support & specific social matters.

Responsible for

Teaching extra-classes to grade 1 to 6 children, focusing on:

  • Khmer language.
  • Mathematics.
  • Respect and politeness values.
  • Developing an active learning methodology.
  • Developing understanding and reasoning ability.
  • Proper assessment of children levels to adapt needed support.
  • Foster a safe, inclusive, and engaging learning environment that promotes academic excellence and character development.

Working hours

Half-time (20hs / week) – Monday to Friday + rarely during weekends for events. 2 options:

Monday to Friday:

  • Morning class: 7.30am to 11.30am.
  • OR afternoon class: 1pm to 5pm.

OR 2.5 days full time:

  • 2 days: 7.30am to 11.30am + 1pm to 5pm
  • Half a day: 7.30am to 11.30am OR 1pm to 5pm

Location CDCM, Phnom-Penh, Toul Kork.

  • Promote reading.
  • Extra-curriculum activities
  • Give children a civic education, teaching respect and politeness values, as well as hygiene and clean environment.
  • Widen their knowledge of Khmer culture and social skills.
  • Organize regular activities outside the classroom (Bophana center, IFC, museum, …). Activities will be academic and non-academic.
  • Encourage positive behavior and discipline through non-violence methods.

  • Good knowledge of MS Word, Excel, SharePoint. Experience in on-line learning is a plus.
  • Good level (speaking-reading-writing) in English. French is a plus.
