Kirirom Food Production (K.F.P) Co., Ltd and the Dutch Fund for Climate and Development (DFCD) are partnering to examine the possibilities of turning the large quantities of organic waste from the production of dried mangoes into environmentally friendly and regenerative inputs for the farms in Cambodia, in the form of biochar production.

About the DFCD

The DFCD enables private sector investment in projects aimed at climate adaptation and mitigation in developing countries. The DFCD, managed by a consortium comprising Climate Fund Managers (CFM), World Wide Fund for Nature the Netherlands (WWF-NL), and SNV Netherlands Development Organisation (SNV), and led by the Dutch Entrepreneurial Development Bank (FMO), offers finance and technical assistance to unlock and scale private sector investment in climate-resilient development through two stages: “origination” and “investment”.

In Cambodia, DFCD has identified an opportunity to support KFP in turning the waste from production to valuable resources, bringing vast benefits to the environment and farmers.

Consultancy Objective (max 300 words):

The overall objective of this assignment is to help KFP develop a strategy for their biochar investment and mango waste processing procedures. The assignment will include a comprehensive feasibility assessment of biochar production from mango peels and seeds, including recommended technology options that meet with international standards, financial modelling of the investment.

The assessment should include:

  • Feedstock supply analysis: conduct an assessment of the supply of different waste products (peels and seeds) from within KFP’s own production, and potential to source additional feedstock from nearby factories, to ensure sustainable feedstock availability.
  • R&D of pilot biochar production: conduct testing of feedstock characteristics and testing or forecasting of biochar properties based on potential pyrolysis technology to identify optimal processing conditions, technology requirements, and output characteristic.
  • Propose technology options of biochar equipment and processing to meet with global standard (European Biochar Certificate or International Biochar Initiative): assess pyrolysis technologies available globally that can be replicated and adapted for organic mango waste ensuring compliance with standards for future commercialisation of biofertiliser and carbon credit potential (biochar carbon removal).
  • Financial modelling of the pilot and scaled-up biochar facility investment: provide a comprehensive analysis of CAPEX and OPEX for a pilot and scalable biochar production facilities, based on feedstock availability findings and aligned with industry standards.
  • Layout design of the biochar facility: design the facility to ensure compliance with industry standards, as well as environmental and social safeguards.
