Announcement Description

Organization Background

The Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) is a US non-profit organization established in 1895 and based in

New York, that saves wildlife and wild places by understanding critical issues, crafting science-based solutions, and taking conservation actions that benefit nature and humanity. With a presence in more than 60 nations, and experience helping to establish over 150 protected areas across the globe, WCS has amassed the biological knowledge, cultural understanding and partnerships to ensure that vibrant, wild places and wildlife thrive alongside local communities. In the Greater Mekong WCS has country programs in Cambodia, China, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam and is managed through a dispersed regional network with a hub in Bangkok.

Project Background

WCS Cambodia provides technical and financial assistance to the management of Keo Seima Wildlife

Sanctuary (KSWS) REDD+ Project and to the Northern Plains Landscape (NPL) REDD+ project, working closely with the Ministry of Environment, and with Indigenous Peoples and local communities. The IBIS Rice Conservation Company (IRCC) was set up by the WCS to directly engage with farmers living within the KSWS and NPL wildlife sanctuaries; initially to work with the Cambodian government to create land security for small-scale farmers, and then to give guaranteed income to these farmers in exchange for environmental stewardship and wildlife-friendly farming practices – zero deforestation, zero poaching and organic agriculture.

The IRCC now works with over 2400 farming families, buying around 3000 tons of rice a year at a substantial market premium and working with farmers on yield improvements, harvest financing and climate resilience. To create added return on the rice harvest purchased, the IRCC has developed branded retail food products under the IBIS Rice brand to sell through domestic and international markets.

Project Summary

The scope of this project is in three areas, all aimed at increasing the added value sale of wildlife-friendly Cambodian commodities and extending the range of commodities that fall within the IRCC’s activity.

Firstly, it is to create specific opportunities for cashew nut products to allow the IRCC to invest in supporting Cambodian cashew nut farmers and bringing them under the wildlife-friendly farming model. Key to this is to create a new retail brand for cashew nuts products, as well as creating opportunities for direct supply of bulk wildlife-friendly cashews to engaged retailers, brands or manufacturers.

Secondly, working with the IRCC team it is to develop new products to bring to market under the IBIS Rice brand and the newly created cashew nut brand that contain a wider range of Cambodian sourced ingredients, particularly spices. This will involve market analysis and experience on product opportunities to then create clear product positioning, working through product creation, packaging and branding and launching to market. New product development should be focused on expanding the current UK sales and brand awareness for IRCC products, but also with an understanding of what will work within the domestic market and additional potential international markets.

Once the product development program is established, the final part of this project is to begin the market activation for new products and new brands into the UK retail market, using the momentum created from the launch of the IBIS rice brand.
