Biodiversity Project Officer - Lomphat
Office based: Ratanakiri Project office, Banlung City, Ratanakiri Province
Reporting to: Senior Biodiversity Officer, Lomphat Project Manager, Technical Advisor
- The Biodiversity Project Officer will develop close working relationships with the above line managers, and liaise regularly to understand, implement, monitor and report project activities.
Reporting to jobholder: Project assistant(s), field monitoring team, community biodiversity monitoring assistant.
- The Biodiversity Project Officer will work closely with the above staff, including organising, joining and supervising fieldwork activities.
Working relationships: The position maintains working relationships with all NatureLife Cambodia staff, primarily in the Lomphat Office. Outside the organisation the position will require liaising with government staff of the Lomphat Wildlife Sanctuary and agencies, with local authorities’ staff, including village, commune and district level officials, as well as committee members of Community Protected Areas and Local Conservation Groups.
Overall purpose of job:
To undertake the implementation of biodiversity conservation activities for NatureLife Cambodia programs in the Lomphat landscape, specifically direct involvement in the design, implementation, monitoring and reporting of those activities.
- Specific Duties
- Assist in the development of mobile vulture restaurant monitoring activities, including leading field work trips, collection/processing of data, and assisting in the reporting for the specific activities of:
- Identification of suitable locations for mobile vulture restaurants, involving community and habitat surveys.
- Procurement of suitable carcasses for the operation of mobile vulture restaurants.
- Management and maintenance of equipment and vehicles needed for the operation of mobile vulture restaurants.
- Coordination and practical delivery of mobile vulture restaurants
- Data collection from mobile vulture restaurants
- Data processing and reporting of mobile vulture restaurants
- Assist the biodiversity team in the design and practical delivery of capture of wild vultures and assisting in the fitting of tracking telemetry devices to the vultures.
- Assist in the collection and analysis of tracking telemetry data from vultures or other tracked species.
- Design, implementation, monitoring and reporting of nest monitoring activities, including key species such as Ibises, Sarus Crane and Vultures.
- Design, implementation, monitoring and reporting of census and population monitoring activities, including White Shouldered Ibis national roost census and Giant Ibis non-breeding censuses.
- Collection, processing and reporting of data related to habitat assessments and evaluations in the Lomphat landscape.
- Collection, processing, and reporting of data related to biodiversity threats and natural resource forest crimes in the Lomphat landscape.
- Directly involved in the preparation of camera trapping surveys, and the preparation, maintenance, deployment, and recovery of camera traps in the field,
- Collection, processing, analysis and reporting of camera trap data.
- Field work duties related to biodiversity or forest inventory monitoring as required under the LWS REDD+ Project implemented by NatureLife.
- Perform other duties as request by project.
- General duties
- Production of project activity reports.
- Develop monthly progress reports as directed.
- Collaborate within the NatureLife team with the production of technical reports and/or scientific articles for publication in journals or scientific or media publishing outlets.
- Be responsible for data storage, including monitoring data, photo or video media.
- Ensure equipment is maintained in good order
- Visualisation or analysis of geospatial data with GIS or other appropriate applications.
- Maintaining of communication channels internally and externally.
- Presentation of NatureLife projects at workshops, seminars, or other public-facing events.
- Provide training and backstopping to other staff as required.
- Provide general assistance with logistical matters as required.
- Provide training and backstopping to other staff as required.
- Provide translation services to other NatureLife Cambodia team as directed.
- Prepare site emergency plans and activity risk assessments for field activities.
- Follow first aid protocols at all times.
- Limits of authority
- Procuring equipment carried out only as directed by your line manager.
- Project funds may only be disbursed as directed by your line manager.
- No statements on behalf of NatureLife are to be made unless directed by your line manager.
- A higher degree in biological sciences, environmental field or similar.
- A good understanding of the environmental conservation scene in Cambodia.
- At least two years’ professional experience in project implementation.
- Ability to read, understand, follow or produce field monitoring protocols.
- Experience in writing technical articles is highly desirable.
- Fluent spoken and written Khmer.
- Strong speaking, listening, reading and writing ability in the English language.
- Ability to take sole responsibility for completing tasks.
- Ability to lead, manage, or work alongside a small team in the office and in the field.
- Able to operate in remote, basic conditions in the Cambodia forest environment.
- Utmost honesty and complete trustworthiness are strict pre-requisites for this role.
